Bowmoor Sailing Club held its annual 6 hour race, generously sponsored by Crewsaver, for the Steve Robertson Memorial Trophy on Saturday 9th July in excellent sailing conditions with an average 15 knot south-westerly breeze, veering to the west as the day progressed. A suitably long lap, with 9 rounding marks, kept all concentrating with various points of sailing and pilotage skills.

Twenty eight teams from 6 different clubs and over 80 sailors took part with numerous spectators. With at least 2 alternating crews per boat they kept the boats moving with some hectic changeovers in an attempt to keep the average corrected lap times as low as possible. As time progressed it became clear that the trophy was been closely fought for between the RS200 team of David Lynall, with Sarah Davies as crew & Tony Freer, crewed by son Zachary, the Solo team of Mike Tustin and Charlie Chandler and the Laser team of Rick Plummer and Rob Napier. When time was signalled after six hours, the RS200 (after 24 laps) pipped the Solo team by an average of just 10 seconds on corrected time per lap, with the Laser team third.

25 teams kept their vessels continuously underway and a special mention for perseverance can go to the Avery Merlin Rocket Team, as the last Space Shuttle goes into orbit, who may not have reached such heights, but did sample the elements and kept going to the end.

Overall Results:

1st RS200 1060, David Lynall/Sarah Davies(Bowmoor SC) & Tony/Zachary Freer (Chew Valley SC)
2nd Solo 5097, Mike Tustin (Bowmoor SC) & Charlie Chandler (Tewkesbury CSC)
