B14 Nationals at Porthpean Sailing Club – Overall

by Ken Fobbester 10 Jul 2011 20:30 BST 8-10 July 2011

Day 3 of the B14 Nationals 2011 saw St Austell Bay initially glassy and windless and prospects for getting races 9 & 10 in seemed remote. However around 10.45 the sea breeze filled in gradually across the bay and the fleet went afloat with Mike Bees and 'Ferret' needing a top four place in at least one race to fend off the challenge from Mark Barnes and Paul Smith, who required two wins if Beezer and Ferret failed to secure their top four place.

At the end of the first lap of race 9 Beezer and Ferret held the lead with David Hayes and Tom Pygall 2nd. Barnes and Smith meanwhile languished in 6th place. On round 2 Hayes and Pygall had taken the lead with Beezer and Ferret holding on to 2nd. By the finish Peter Knight and Jane Nash had stormed through to take the win followed by Hayes and Pygall, Tim Harrison and Jonathon Ratcliffe and crucially Beezer and Ferret in 4th and claiming the 2011 National Championship title.

On to Race 10, and with the pressure off Beezer and Ferret made the win more emphatic with another bullet followed by Harrison and Ratcliffe and Barnes and Smith.

Porthpean SC would like to thank the B14 fleet for being friendly and sporting visitors and for providing highly competitive and entertaining racing.
