Laser Vago Open at Banbury Sailing Club

3 July 2011
Light winds dominated the day at Banbury 2011, as last year. This did not deter the enthusiastic Vago sailors. With 4mph winds forecast the weather reports turned out to be conservative as they dropped and occasionally gusted 4mph! It was agreed to change the original format of 3 races, to shorter races, and 4 races were successfully completed.
The starts played an important factor on the outcome of the races. All four races were won by different crews. The first race was won by Nigel and Steve 537, heading off on a port tack into clear wind and arriving at the mark on starboard.
Doug and Sally 996 demonstrated success could be achieved without a gnav (kicker) strut in the second race.
Paul and Vicky in their first Vago event took the third race in the closest finish of the day (a few boat lengths separating the first three positions.
Despite capsizing (how?) in the first race James and Stuart 740 took advantage of port bias on the start line to take the last race. The race officer shortened the start line on each race, which presented an additional challenge for gaining position.
Overall Results:
1st Paul Fuller, Vicky 463 (Redditch SC)
2nd Doug Cooley, Sally Harris 996 (Bartley SC)
3rd James Scobie, Stuart Harris 740 (Banbury SC)
Thank you'd went to the duty sailing officers and galley team at Banbury SC for providing a warm and friendly hospitality.
