Scottish Skiff Championships at East Lothian Yacht Club

by Iain McCafferty and Martin Wilkie 10 Jun 2011 21:50 BST 4-5 June 2011

The Scottish Skiff Championships were held at East Lothian Yacht Club over the weekend of 4/5 June.

Saturday provided a Force 3 from the East and some typically challenging North Berwick waves. Three windward/leeward races were held followed by a long distance race around the Bass Rock. Ian Renilson in his Musto Skiff enjoyed the conditions and, were it not for an uncharacteristic course error in the first race, would have made a clean sweep of the first three races. As it was, Alastair Conn (Musto Skiff) took the win in the first race followed by Martin Wilkie and Iain McCafferty in their International 14 and John Evans (Musto Skiff). In the next two races, Renilson took a win ahead of Conn and Evans and then ahead of Paul Hignett (International Moth) and Conn. The Bass Rock race was held at the end of the day in amongst some interesting waves and Wilkie and McCafferty took the win ahead of Conn and Hignett.

Sunday dawned with a slightly lighter breeze from the East and a significantly easier sea state. The first race was won by Wilkie and McCafferty, followed by Conn and Evans. The wind built slightly for the next race, and Hignett’s speed over the water (along with some great port end flyers) was finally rewarded with a win, Renilson taking second and Conn third. The wind stayed around for the final race, where Conn rounded off a very consistent series by taking both the race and the overall win, with Renilson’s second and Wilkie/McCafferty’s third also reflecting the eventual overall order.

Overall Results:

1st Alastair Conn, Musto Skiff (Derwent Reservoir SC) 11pts
2nd Ian Renilson, Musto Skiff (Dalgety Bay SC) 14pts
3rd Martin Wilkie and Iain McCafferty, International 14 (Dalgety Bay SC) 16pts
4th John Evans, Musto Skiff, Musto Skiff (Derwent Reservoir SC) 21pts
5th Paul Hignett, International Moth (Loch Venachar SC) 22pts
