Enterprising sailors take the glory
In a rash of recent competition results at Henley Sailing Club there were some really big prize winners. The biggest prize on offer at the Open Meeting on Sunday 5 June was the solid silver HSC Commodore’s Cup for Enterprises won in tricky easterly winds by Martin and Laurence Davies of Rugby and Daventry Sailing Club with David and John Beaney from Castaways SC runners up. On the same day the winner of the Vice-Commodore’s Cup was Oxfordshire librarian Carol Stitson sailing a Laser with Caversham based Jeff Manning second.
In earlier racing Steve Rothery and Helene Hook from Twyford in a vintage National 12 won the Hunter Cup with Peta Bowyer of Benson came second in a Laser. In the one-day Junior Cup Ruaridh Sheppard from Charvil beat Tilehurst schoolgirl Emma Cadwallader to first place in gusty winds. In a tightly fought spring series of races the Macpherson Cup was one by Carol Stitson with Alan Cadwallader second.
The club is now preparing for its 2011 public Open Day on 18 June at 14.00 - 17.00 as part of the Wargrave Festival scene. Everyone is welcome to have a go at sailing with our experienced helms showing beginners the art of sailing. A new sailing dinghy, the X-1, will also be giving demonstrations of its racing abilities. For landlubbers there is the chance to enjoy a cream tea on the superb riverside lawns or a drink at the bar see www.henleysailingclub.org.uk for details of how to get to the club at Willow Lane, Wargrave.
