Platu 25 World Championships at Gmunden, Austria - Day 4

by Carla Anselmi 2 Jun 2011 17:53 BST 28 May - 3 June 2011

Only one race in light and shifty winds

Fourth day of the Platu 25 Worlds on Lake Traunsee in Austria was characterized by a very light and fluky wind, accompanied by rain. Only one race could be finished. The Spanish teams did not repeat yesterday’s good performances, it was more a German day, but the Italians on Euk II are still leading.

The Race Committee decided to leave the for the race area earlier today, in search for a decent breeze. And they were right as a north westerly wind of around 6/8 knots welcomed the 46 boats strong fleet on the Lake waters. Yet, the breeze was particularly unstable and the Committee had to give a second start because the wind shifted hugely.

The only race of the day was very much German speaking, after the Spanish excellent performances recorded yesterday, with Falkone” helmed by Falko Knabe closing in first followed by the Austrians on White Pearl skippered by Michael Farthofer and third was another local team Damaris helmed by Guenther Prummer. To be noted that almost all the Spanish crews were victim of an opaque strategy, as on the first upwind leg they opted for the left side of the race area, that proved to be the wrong one.

After several attempts the Committee launched a second start, but then the wind being too unstable to guarantee a fair race, had to give up.

After today’s racing the overall ranking has changed, except for the Italians on Euz II Monella Viziata led by Sandro Montefusco who are still leading with a good 8 points advantage on the second placed Kyra helmed by Lars Baher and ten on third Falkone helmed by Falko Knabe. The Iberians have thus left podium positions Marc de Antonio’s Bribon Movistar is now fourth and Italian Nanuk, helmed by Luigi Ravioli with Lorenzo Bressani calling tactics, is fifth.
