Cadet World Championships at Adelaide, Australia - Day 1

by Ian Videlo 30 Dec 2004 09:13 GMT 30 December 2004

Warm sunshine, but little wind greeted the competitors on the opening day of the 2004 Cadet World Championships in Adelaide, South Australia. An attempt to get a first race in before lunch was aborted as the wind faded, but fortunately over lunch it gradually built to a solid force 2 from the South.

The first race saw all of the seven strong British contingent heading out to sea in search of more breeze, but this proved not to be a wise choice with the inshore path paying dividends. First around the windward mark was the Belgiam (Yannick LeFevre) followed by an Argentine (Manuel Bologna) and the Czech European Champion Petr Fiala.

By the 3rd windward mark, James Rusden had got the hang of the conditions and climbed to 12th while the remaining British were sticking to their guns and favouring the seaward side of the beat.

Race 1 Results:

1st ARG 8071 Manuel Bologna / Rosaro Torre
2nd NED 8334 Remy Oomens / Lotte Wijnbergh
3rd ARG 8060 Jose Tedin / Sebastian Aranguren
4th CZE 9470 Petr Fiala / Hynek Barkman
Leading British:
10th James Rusden / Sam Muskett

The second race got underway in a strengthening Force 3 breeze, and the British sailors were now back in the groove. At the first mark Autralian Pat Hutton narrowly lead from GBR8415 Will Rusden / Matthew Davanzo and GBR8420 Jodie & Stevie Green. By the second Mark Will & Matthew had taken the lead which they went on to build to well over a minute by the finish. Behind them the racing was close with James Rusden temporarily taking second place before falling back into the chasing pack and leaving Jodie & Stevie Green to finish second with Tom Makey and Jonathan Kimber finishing in 5th place.

Race 2 Results:

1st GBR 8415 Will Rusden / Matthew Davanzo
2nd GBR 8420 Jodie Green / Stevie Green
3rd ARG 8066 Victoria Travascio / Eugina Jason
4th AUS 9012 Patrick Hutton / Lewis Noye
