Southampton Water Sailing Association Evening Series Race 1

by Chris Waddington 11 May 2011 00:24 BST 26 April 2011

First race ecstasy for Erik and Ex-Tip

Many new faces appeared for the first race in Southampton Water Sailing Association’s 2011 evening series. This popular interclub event saw a total of 13 boats came to the line in a North Easterly wind occasionally gusting to force 4. Starting toward the North the fleet initially reached along the Weston Shore before bearing away around Hovercraft 4 towards the New Forest shoreline. In class 1, Bernard Fyne of Warsash Sailing Club took an early lead in the slender Mustang 30. Holding his spinnaker well on the reaching legs Fyne stretched his elapsed lead to more than 15 minutes over the 2 laps and secured 1st place over Roger Lockett of Hythe Sailing Club in his Ballad 28 Blueprint. Third place went to Peter Hairsnape and Jonathon Tickner sailing their distinctive yellow coloured mini tonner Calypso..

In class 2 the story was similar with newcomer Cuan Marsh of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club running from the front in his Limbo 21 Ex-Tip and finishing well in front of second placed Ricky Yardley of Southampton Sailing Club, third place going to Brian Allen of Hythe Sailing Club in a Sunfast 20. Well represented with a 6 boat diverse fleet, Hythe Sailing Club’s entrants also included Trevor Tenison’s one-off wooden classic Dream Weaver.

The SWSA evening Series continues at fortnightly intervals through to September. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
