Streaker Open at Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club

by Steve Chilton 6 May 2011 17:29 BST 30 April 2011

The day dawned with bright sunshine and North Easterly 20 mph winds. North Easterlies are an interesting wind direction at Yorkshire Ouse as on the river these winds become; northerlies, easterlies, westerly and southerlies sometimes all at the same time! This has the effect of making the sailing very interesting indeed, with some competitors taking a swim, with some very spectacular capsizes.

The first race got off to a good start and the fleet soon spread out due to the challenging conditions, Dave Butler of Welton led most of the time being in first place for the first lap and finished in first place. Ian Lees of Scammonden was in fifth position in the first lap but narrowed the gap to come in second. Peter Craggs of YRISC was in second place for the first lap and finished third.

Race two started without incident, but then as the fleet went round a bend in the river, one boat managed to get its mast threaded between the forestay and mast of another competing boat, all this on a very tricky stretch of the river! With some very skilful seamanship skills they managed to part. The first lap was again won by Dave Butler he went on to win the second race. Ian Lees was in second place on the first lap and managed to finish in second place. Jonathan Chappel of Ripon Sailing club came in third in the first and final lap.

Race three started, Dave Butler having won race one and two decided not to sail race three. Ian Lees was in the lead at the end of lap 1 and finished in first place. Peter Craggs was in third position at the end of lap one but closed the gap and came in second. Jonathan Chappel was in second place and the end of lap one and finally finished in third place.

There were thirteen boats competing; with eight visitors, two boats from our sister club YRISC and three home boats.
