Laser Midland Grand Prix Series at Chelmarsh Sailing Club

Local sailor wins event
A sunny and breezy spring morning greeted sailors at Chelmarsh Sailing Club, Shropshire for the first Laser Open in the 2011 Midland Grand Prix series. The club at Chelmarsh Reservoir, Hampton Loade, saw sailors from all around the Midland region compete in the event.
With the wind still picking up, the racing began with 27 Lasers on the start line with strong leader & Chelmarsh sailor Cameron Smith of Bridgnorth taking first place, Chelmarsh’s John Kingsley in second and Barnt Green Sailing Clubs Rob Lenox in third.
The second race started again with flukey and shifty winds varying between force 2 to force 3 with some strong gusts, making challenging conditions for all, this time with Andy Allan of Trimpley Sailing Club first at the windward mark. Andy kept his lead for the first half of the race despite the conditions, with Cameron Smith overtaking him to take the lead with Andy in second and Pete Townend of Chelmarsh S.C in third place.
The weather and wind conditions remained the same for the third race with Roger Clay of Kenilworth first at the windward mark followed by Cameron Smith set the scene for the rest of the race with Rob Lennox in third place.
The eventual winners of the day were Chelmarsh’s Cameron Smith in first place, Roger Clay in Second, and Rob Lennox in third. First lady went to Chelmarsh Sailing club’s Gill Malcolm, first Youth was won by Trimpley’s James Allan and first Radial went to Chelmarsh’s Johnathon Taylor.
Chelmarsh Sailing Club will be holding a Learn to Sail program for Juniors from 23rd April. A Taster Day will also be held at the club on 2nd Mayfor anyone to try out the sport.
