The MYA became 100 years old at 2.00pm on the 18th February 2011.
On that day 100 years ago a group of enthusiasts met in a hotel in Fleet St, London. Their aim was to organise and promote Model Yachting in the UK, what commitment and enthusiasm they must have had.
Who could have foreseen the developments that would take place over the following one hundred years in design, construction techniques, materials and the arrival of the electronic age?
The Association itself has adapted and changed over the years allowing the development of new ideas and techniques.
Throughout this year the MYA and the member clubs will celebrate the Centenary with a variety of competitions and events.
Most notably the MYA are hosting the World Championships for the most popular One Metre Class with 76 skippers from all over the world descending on West Kirby SC to compete. There will be at least one Centenary Party during the week long competition at the end of May/early June.
In July Fleetwood MY & PBC will host a week long National Regatta for the A Class yacht, both radio controlled and vane controlled. That will be a sight to see.
Plans are in hand to hold a day long event featuring yachts throughout the 100 years featuring vintage models right through to today’s modern state of the art boats. This will be at a venue in London.
Members of the MYA will receive a bumper Centenary edition of the Association magazine Acquaint in the spring which should become a collector’s item.
More detailed information will be available as the year progresses and full details will be found on the MYA web site.
