Royal Southampton Yacht Club Charity Pursuit Race

by Simon Forbes 5 Dec 2004 21:44 GMT 5 December 2004

Victory for Njos, Ellie and Roo

The Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Charity Pursuit Race Winter series was held on Sunday 5th December. The Race Management Team set the Committee Boat off Weston.

The first boat away in the pursuit was Ian Ward’s Moody 29 Bedouin at 0930 but the light breeze was dying and some boats had to kedge as the wind died away completely.

The leading boat had just rounded the first mark of Admiralty South by the time Ben Goodland’s Raider 30 catamaran Roo had started at 1051. When a gentle zephyr set in the fleet were very bunched around the first few mark as the fleet made their way down Southampton Water.

The Race Committee shortened the race at Bald Head buoy off Hamble. First to finish was Ben Goodland’s 30ft cat Roo.

Class 1 IRC saw Tim Octon’s Corby 35 Njos win from Andrew Percival’s Corby 33 Big Boys Toys II with Mike Garvey’s X332 X Parrot third.

Class 4 Club Class saw Ginny Bennett’s Dehler 36CWS win from John Cooper’s Hunter 707 Tigerfeet with Andrew Campbell’s Bavaria 44 Faze 3 third.

In the Multihull Class, first to finish was Ben Goodland’s Raider 30 Roo with second George Burn’s Dragonfly 920X Force X with Tim Swinburn’s My Cat third.

After racing at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club House, many of the crews were still in fancy dress and a raffle was held which raised over 800 pounds for the Ellen MacArthur Trust. The Trust supports, empowers and enlivens children suffering from cancer or leukaemia by introducing them to the joys of sailing on the sea.

The RSYC Frostbite series starts on Sunday 9th January. For details contact Cathy Crawley, Sailing Secretary, RSYC, Tel: 023 8022 3352 or email racing@rsyc.org.uk
