Belen Tavella and Franco Greggi win

29er World Champions Belen Tavella and Franco Greggi fought hard this week in conditions that challenged their skills on and off the water. The deadlock between the top two boats that began on the first day of the championship continued all the way until beyond the last race. After the third place team retired from the last race due to an infraction on the water, Tavella/Greggi and Bettini/Gwozdz remained tied for first. The tie-breaker then went to Belen Tavella and Franco Greggi, making them the 2011 29er World Champions.

The final day’s conditions were a complete change from what the sailors have experienced during the competition. Competition was postponed onshore for 1 hour while everyone waited patiently for the wind to fill. Once on the course, the first race was held in 6-8 knots of wind from the north/northeast. Bettini/Gwozdz led at the first mark, but Tavella/Greggi passed them by the second weather mark and crossed the finish in first followed by Bettini/Gwozdz.

The second race had Juan Krevisky and Billy Lopez Segura leading from start to finish with German Billoch/Pedro Kocourek crossing second. Bettini/Gwozdz crossed third with Tavella/Greggi sailing to a 18th and their discard race. The last and final race had the wind shifting to the east, but remaining at 6-8 knots in velocity. Krevisky/Lopez Segura again led the race at the first mark followed by Gonzalo Pollitzer and Jose Maria Diez. Francisco Cosentino and Tomas Wagmaister were in third, but fouled Tavella/Greggi and later retired after crossing the line in third. Tavella/Greggi crossed in fifth with Bettini/Gwozdz in seventh.

Belen Tavella and Franco Greggi are 2011 World Champions followed by Pepe Bettini & Fernando Gwozdz and Francisco Cosentino and Tomas Wagmaister in third, with a complete Argentine sweep.

Silver fleet champions remained Spaniards Luis Rodenas Lorda and Juan Martinez Ruiz with Danish girls Lin Christiansen and Stine Quorning in second and Americans Declan Whitmyer and Ian Storck in third.

The top youth team was Gael Jaffrezic and Julien Bloyet of France. The top female team was Ida Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen from Denmark, their third top female title for the 29er World Championships.
