COMMUNICATIONS AGENCY BRAHM CELEBRATES 21 YEARS OF CHAMPIONING
The Brahm Gallery in Leeds is celebrating 21 years of art and new talent and will host its 150th exhibition ‘Scarborough Window’ by Clive Rand on Wednesday 1st December 2004. Original paintings and prints will be for sale at this landmark exhibition and all proceeds will be donated to the Scarborough Lifeboat Station through The RNLI Leeds Business Branch.
The Brahm Gallery, housed in the reception of communications agency Brahm, was established in 1983 by the company founders who wanted to give new opportunities to artists looking to launch their careers. Artists who have exhibited their work include Phill Hopkins who has gone on to produce work for the Imperial War Museum, and artist/curator Paddy Hartley who has recently been awarded a highly prestigious Wellcome Trust SciArt Production Award to work as Artist in Residence at Guy's Hospital, Kings College London until 2007.
The 150th exhibition ‘Scarborough Window’ is by Clive Rand one of the original founders of Brahm. It will feature 12 watercolour paintings showing view through a window on the Scarborough Esplanade for every month of the year. The January sailing race, the February downpour, the March jogger, the moon in June, the August sea fret and the October gale are just some of the ever-changing scenes that depict the unique character of the town, close to the artists’ own heart.
Speaking about the upcoming exhibition, Clive Rand said, “It has been a real challenge to produce the ‘Scarborough Window’ series. Whilst I am delighted to have this opportunity to show my work and to raise funds for the Scarborough Lifeboat Station, it is a nerve racking experience - so many talented artists have appeared on these walls. It’s not quite the Saatchi Gallery, but when my colleagues and I set up the Brahm Gallery 21 years ago, we had no idea how successful and enjoyable it would be”.
Paddy Hartley, artist and Brahm Gallery curator for four years said, “The Gallery provides a superb opportunity for up and coming UK artists to have their work publicly viewed - it’s great to see art being integrated so enthusiastically and effectively with business. The support from Brahm and my work with the gallery has certainly acted as a launch pad for my career. I think it works so well because Brahm is a very creative environment, providing an interesting and unusual gallery for artists and a superb opportunity for the company’s employees to be inspired – everyone benefits”.
Brahm has a prestigious art collection displayed throughout its offices, including: Phill Hopkins’ welded steel ironing board entitled ‘Man in the Moon’ and a giant carved stone heel by Gregor Beedie which lives in the café. The collection also includes ‘Ponte’ a screen-print by the highly acclaimed Eduardo Paolozzi.
‘Scarborough Window’ is being exhibited from Thursday December 2nd 2004 to Friday January 14th 2005. Entry to the Brahm Gallery is free. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.00pm, closing for Christmas from December 22nd 2004 to January 4th 2005.
