by Nigel Duncan 21 Nov 2004 10:53 GMT 20 November 2004

TEENAGER Callum Calder was last night (Saturday) crowned as the best young sailor for 2004 by the Forth Yacht Clubs Association (FYCA). The 15-year-old won the Hardy Trophy and was presented with the trophy by Mrs Fiona Brown, the new chairman of the FYCA.

Calder, from Edinburgh, is a member of Cramond Boat Club and at Port Edgar, and is one of five Scots, three of them from the FYCA area, who are included in the Great Britain Topper squad. The Heriot's schoolboy was nominated for the award which caps a great year for the young sailor. Calder's Cramond club-mate, Andy Walker, was also presented with the silverware for his success in the summer-long Forth Yacht Clubs championship.

He steered his Westerly Griffon yacht called Exisle to first place in the Mickery, second spot in East Coast Sailing Week and led his class home in the Edinburgh Regatta.

In second place overall was Jock Blair (Port Edgar) on RoBo and the well-known yacht chandler was second in the West Forth, first in East Coast Sailing Week and second in the Edinburgh Regatta in his Ronautica RO340.

Simon Howell (Port Edgar) claimed third place in the overall series by steering Jezebel, a First 30 ES, to third in the West Forth, first in East Coast Sailing Week and second in the Carl Dyson.
