Dulwich College wins Arrow Trophy 2010

Dulwich College has won the annual Arrow Trophy competition at Cowes held over the weekend of the 9th/10th October, winning the trophy for the second time in the event’s 23 year history.

The competition started in 1987 as a written challenge from John Bradshaw of Harrow to the Old Etonians: “I am instructed by my Commodore to extend to you a challenge to participate in a series of Match Races over the weekend of 16th-18th October next.”

Harrow, helmed by Robin Aisher, won the first match. From this start began what is now an important yachting regatta attracting crews of 8 from over 20 of the most well-known schools around the UK. In 2010, following 5 fleet races on the Saturday, the top 4 college crews of Uppingham, Fitzharry’s, Dulwich and Wellington went head to head in a round robin of 12 Match Races. The best-of-three Final between Dulwich and Fitzharry’s was aggressive during the pre-starts and closely fought with tacking duels. The third and deciding race was won by Dulwich after a perfectly executed gybe-set at the last mark allowed them to roll past Fitzharry’s on the final run to win by 12 seconds.

Chris Savage, tactician/helm of the Dulwich boat, commented: “It was exciting racing. Fitzharry’s had a good crew and Team GBR Racing Coach, George Barker, at the helm. He was taking no prisoners!”.

Skipper of Dulwich, Alastair Capon, said: “It was an amazing result and another terrific team performance by the crew, sailing in very testing conditions. The support we receive from the school is invaluable. We look forward to next year and racing in a fleet of Beneteau 40.7s.”

The results can be found here.
