Ullman Sails J/24 Autumn Cup at Mayflower Marina

by Clare Gilbert 6 Oct 2010 11:48 BST 2-3 October 2010

The Mayflower Marina & Ullman Sails J/24 Autumn Cup was held last weekend in Plymouth Sound with thirteen boats in attendance. The weather conditions looked to be tricky with gales forecast either side of the weekend, but the Royal Western YC Race Officer, Mike Pearson managed to find enough moderate weather to get five races away.

Due to the heavy left-over swell, the courses were set inside the breakwater – The southerlies providing exciting downwind finishes a few metres in front of the rocky foreshore of Drake’s Island.

After four races held on the first day, there were several clusters of boats all very close on points. The final race on the second day provided a few last minute place changes and in the end the final winner was Boomerang – A popular winner due to the fact that, despite Jim’s commitment to the J/24 class for many years, this is his first win in this event – Congratulations to Jim, both James’s, Chris & Patrick.

Special thanks must also go to again to Jim Anderson, Nick McDonald and Scott who, without very much notice, managed to get the club boat Nitro out on the water for this event. It’s great to see Nitro sailing in Plymouth and hopefully she will be well used and raise the Plymouth fleet numbers into double figures.

The event was sponsored by Mayflower Marina who provided not only berthing and craneage at a very favourable rate, but also a warm welcome. Ullman Sails also sponsored the event providing excellent prizes and further contributing to costs of running the regatta. The race management was by the Royal Western Yacht Club and provided excellent racing over a weekend with challenging weather conditions.
