Port Edgar Yacht Club Autumn Series - Day 5

by nigel duncan 15 Nov 2004 19:47 GMT 14 November 2004

AM Series:

Jubilant skipper Andy Burns celebrated his first-ever race win when EuRoBo led the fast yacht fleet home in the opening event of the Winter AM Series in the Forth Estuary.

The BP employee, in his first season of competitive sailing, had Martin Blyth at the helm as the Ronautica 330 came home ahead of experienced compeitior Jock McDougall in Shoki.

Third was RoBo skippered by Jock Blair, boss of the Port Edgar-based Boson's Locker chandlery. Conditions, with winds gusting to around 30 knots and a strong swell, were tough for the eight yachts which braved the elements in the shortened course.

Burns, whose company sponsored last summer's East Coast Sailing Week, said: "We're naturally very pleased and it's great to start the series with a win."

Cherry Pye, a Hustler 25.5 skippered by Chris Hall, won the slow yacht event with John Mitchell's H boat, Highlander, in second spot and Salmon, skippered by Bruce Walker, in third place out of the ten starters.

PM Series:

David Wilson continued his winning ways by leading the fleet home in the opening Winter Series PM fast yacht division in the Forth Estuary.

The Port Edgar-based X 332, which won the recent Autumn PM series, powered home ahead of club-mate Jock Blair's Ronautica RO 340 called RoBo.

Third was Simon Howell's First 30 ES called Jezebel, also based at Port Edgar, and the nine boats entered encountered gusts of up to 40 knots on the tideway during the shortened course.

Only three Hunter 707's braved the conditions with Robert Yates' yacht called Scooter crossing the line ahead of James Hunter's Code Z (Port Edgar) and Phil Walter's Whippersnapper.

Cherry Pye, a Hustler 25.5 skippered by Chris Hall and based at Port Edgar, won the slow yacht division with Smithereen, a Seamaster 925 skippered by Tom Wilson from Royal Forth Yacht Club, was second with Arthur Dickson's Dufour 1800 called Auberge (Port Edgar) in third place.

The dinghy and catamaran divisions were cancelled because of the strong westerly winds.
