Tasar Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 2

by Pete Ellis 18 Sep 2010 22:14 BST 17-19 September 2010

A light breeze and a two hour postponement gave way to some great racing in a strengthening breeze in Torbay for the second day of the UK Tasar Nationals held at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club.

A forecast of 7 knots did not look too promising for the day, but the wind filled in to 15+ knots for the three 50 minute races. With the breeze in a different direction from day 1 but still shifting sailors would need to work out the shifts if they would have any consistency throughout the day.

Race 3 was won by current national Champions Malcolm and Fiona Davies. Australians Paul and Bronwyn Ridgway sailed through the top bunch of boats to finish in second. Foiling expert Sam Pascoe with Mike Robbins crewing and Rick and Sarah Perkins has a good race playing the shifts to finish 3rd and 4th.

A 90 degree windshift between races 3 and 4 brought a stronger breeze giving the opportunity for more of the planing reaches that make the Tasar so enjoyable to sail. Malcolm and Fiona showed that they had found their pace for the day by winning again, followed by the Ridgways. Allan Orton and Matt Searle from Porthpean sailed a great race to finish in 6th. Several boats were over eager on the start line and were black flagged, giving themselves a chance to sample the delights on offer on Torquay harbourside.

In race 5 the Davies and Ridgways were joined at the front by Pete Ellis and Charlotte Birbeck and Stacey Bray and Steve Coello. By the end of the race the Ridgways recorded the victory followed by Stacey and Steve.

Sunday will be the final day of racing with 3 races planned. With the points close and windy weather forecasted all is still to play for.
