Ramsgate Week at the Royal Temple Yacht Club - Day 5

by Harriet Flory 21 Aug 2010 08:29 BST 16-21 August 2010

Competitors were greeted with perfect sailing conditions for the penultimate day of Ramsgate Week; fabulous deep green sea, a blue sky and winds of 10 – 25 knots. The Cruisers Classes continued their series for the week with their fifth race. The IRC Classes competed in the second day of the IRC Regatta with two races which were mainly windward leeward courses.

IRC Class 1

The front of the fleet was a four way battle between Oystercatcher XXVI, Assassin, Booty! and Manta Sailing. In the fresh breeze, Michel Lefebvre’s Frist 40 Manta Sailing shared the honours Richard Matthew’s Humphreys 42 Oystercatcher XXVI, with one win each and the Stewart designed Booty! in third.

Class 1 Results – Race 1

John Allen’s X302 Antix also continued her success for the week, taking second place in both races with Tony and Chuffy Merewether’s Amazon and local boat Who’s to no each taking a third place.

Cruiser Classes 5 & 6

Classes 5 and 6 enjoyed a 26 mile race in glorious sailing conditions. The fleet got off to a fantastic start and saw close racing throughout the race. Despite the long and tiring race, the crews enjoyed a wonderful and competitive day out on the water.

Class 5 Results
1 Cheeky Monkey (Graham Jones)
2 Surprise (Frank Martin)
3 Moondust (Anthony Duggan)

Class 6 Results
1 Reaction (Mark Dale & Bob Booth)

Cruiser Class 7

Most boats in Cruiser Class 7 started from the Harbour end of the line, but with a busy start teo boats were recalled, but only Pacemaker responded. Scherzo, Lady Jane and Channel Pilot led the fleet to the North East Goodwin, but all three overstood the mark on the return to Broadstairs Knoll allowing the following group of yachts to close the gap. All boats hardened course inshore before tacking to East Brake, by which time Lady Jane had opened up a clear lead, and would not be caught. She crossed the line first, followed by Scherzo, Channel Pilot and Amilie. Channel Pilot were advised by the race officer that they were the second boat recalled at the start and thus disqualified. Josh Lidstone’s Lunar Sea won the race on corrected time, with Lady Jane second and Amelie third.

Cruiser Class 7 Results
1 Lunar Sea (Josh Lidstone)
2 Lady Jane (Paul Parsons)
3 Amelie (R.Archer & M.Gray)
