Tempest National Championships at Carsington Sailing Club

by Ged Bellamy 22 Jul 2010 16:24 BST 16-18 July 2010

Visitors from Ullswater YC in the north and Hornet SC in the south joined the Carsington fleet for 3 days of exciting conditions with squalls and fresh SW winds around 20 to 24 knots on the Friday reducing slightly over the 3 day event.

Friday saw 2-races with very heavy squalls especially providing views of the occasional keel. Carsington’s Jim Hart & John Gill (GBR1121) led the fleet at the end of the day with a 1st and a 2rd place closely followed by Ullswaters Mike & Paul Adams (GBR1181). Friday evenings BBQ & Bar proved quite popular with some very tired and hungry crews.

Saturday dawned with the arrival of 3 more boats in very slightly lighter conditions resulting in some close racing both at the front and rear of the 9 boat fleet. 1 race was held in the morning before lunch followed by 2 more in the afternoon. Following his retirement for repairs on the previous day Ian Modral & Robin Higgens (GBR1114) from Ullswater SC put together 3 fine races to finish the day with 3 bullets.

The evening was finished off by an excellent meal in the clubhouse, which was enjoyed by everyone.

Sunday saw 2 races and some rain with winds gusting 12-18 knots at times. Once again our own sailors Jim &John where battling it out at the front of the fleet only to see the transom of the Ullswater yacht GBR1114 slowly pull away to take another 2 first places.

National Race Officer Henry Wright & his team once again set some fine courses and provided the fleet with a challenging event over the 7 races.
