Bowmoor Sailing Club held its third annual six hour race last weekend and 29 teams came to compete from Bowmoor and other local clubs. There were perfect conditions for the event with a steady force 4-5 warm wind and a lake full of warm water!

The teams could sail any class of boat and had to start within a ten minute window from 10.45am. We had a wide cross section of boats including an RS100, a K1, a Mirror, Vago XD, Merlin Rocket, a Wanderer, a Wayfarer and a Topper. Each lap was recorded and each team had to have at least three changeovers during the race.

One team – a one man team – Charlie Chandler in an International Canoe class dinghy, had to have three compulsory stops and sailed for the full 6 hours. He finished 5th overall.

First and second places were taken by Phantom class single handed dinghies; Simon Hawkes and Mark Weston were first with Mike Tustin and Russell Hopkins second. Third were Cameron Hunter/John Ellery and Tony Freer/Zachery Freer in an RS200 – with spinnaker.

First youth was Jorden Conroy, Max Goodridge Josh Cullen and Andrew. The best fancy dress went to the 420 of Irene Milne, David James, David and Margaret Haines and the best Comedy change over went to the Merlin Rocket sailed by Richard, Amanda, Phillip and Izzie Avery who took the Buoy all the way across the lake.

The places were very close after six hours of sailing with only 2 minutes difference on corrected handicap time on average laps. This was another very successful event at the club with a disco and barbeque in the evening.
