For all those sailors looking to take part in the 65th Merlin Rocket National Championships hosted by Penzance Sailing Club from 15th-20th August 2010, the discounted entry fee deadline is drawing near.

At midnight on 1st July, the early entry fee of £150 will disappear into a puff of smoke and the new rate of £175 will be enforced. Just think what that £25 can go towards?!

There is plenty to look forward to at this year’s championships, with fantastic continuing support from our sponsors: Synthesize Yachts and Design, TackTick, Chipstow, Winder Boats, Marlow Ropes and Allen Brothers , and more prizes coming from Pinnell & Bax, Hyde Sails, North Sails, Speed Sails, Goacher Sails, Phil Scott Boats and Harken.

Whilst trying to promise champagne sailing conditions on every day, Thursday we guarantee champagne for the helm and crew of the first 21 boats on the water. Other prizes as well as the ultimate “Yachting World Trophy” for the first helm overall and the “City of Plymouth Trophy” for the first placed crew overall include; the first helm over the age of 45 but under 55, the first helm over the aged of 55, first helm under 21 all on the first day of the championships.

There is a heavyweight’s prize, for combined helm/crew weight of over 26 stone, the “Ball and Chain” prize is for the first couple not married or related by birth. The “Buttercup Trophy” is for the lowest placed boat having completed all races and a nice shiny new Tacktick Micro Compass is on offer to the first overall sailing without navigational aides. Plus many many more.

With the 2009 winning helm not entered to date, can his crew Olly Turner retain his winning crew position with his new helm Richard Whitworth? Whitworth has not slipped outside the top 5 since winning the National Championships back in 2004 on the Cornish south coast.

How about Simon Blake and the current class Chairman Alex Jackson, both yet to win a national championship, they are currently joint second on the Silver Tiller circuit with Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis, who will be looking to make a mark in Penzance. These 3 new pairings for the 2010 season will certainly be some of the talent venturing out onto the water in less than 65 days, more on the teams to follow soon!

Don’t have a Merlin Rocket but want to join in the fun? Why not sign up to the boat charter service, please contact Andy Hay. If you are not coming then let Andy know as we have a number of teams ready and willing to charter your boat.

Come and experience the magic of Merlins at Penzance 15th – 20th August 2010!
