Irish Sailing Team announced for Volvo Youth ISAF Worlds

by James O'Callaghan 7 May 2010 14:16 BST 8-17 July 2010

6 Sailors to travel to Turkey

The ISA Board today (7th May 2010) ratified the team to represent Ireland at the 2010 ISAF Youth World Sailing Championships, which takes place in Istanbul, Turkey from 8th – 17th July 2010. More than 300 young sailors from 60 nations will compete across eight disciplines, of which Ireland will compete in four.

The Irish Team is:

  • Mathew O’Dowd (Royal St.George Yacht Club ): will compete in the Laser Radial Boy’s One Person Dinghy
  • Sophie Murphy (Quoile Yacht Club): will compete in the Laser Radial Girl’s One Person Dinghy
  • Cian O’Regan (Kinsale Yacht Club) & Scott Flanagan (Yacht Club): will compete in the 420 Boy’s Two Person Dinghy
  • Jane Butler & Jennifer Andreasson (Royal St George Yacht Club): will compete in the 420 Girl’s Two Person Dinghy

James O’Callaghan ISA Performance Director commented: “Achieving the nomination to represent Ireland at the Youth Worlds is a two part process. Initially sailors have to win the ISA nomination series, which combines the recent ISA Youth Nationals and the Mitsubishi Motors Youth Championship. The second criterion is the attainment of a defined international standard at pre-identified events.”

O’Callaghan continued: “This year’s team is extremely strong. They have the potential to achieve, not just in Turkey but within the longer term Olympic programme.”

In 2012 the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship will take place in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, Ireland.
