Hertfordshire County Youth Regatta at Bury Lake

by James Le Couillard / HYDRS.org.uk 28 Apr 2010 09:20 BST 25 April 2010

Bury Lake Young Mariners once again hosted the Hertfordshire County Youth Regatta on Sunday 25 April.

After a relaxed briefing from the Herts Youth Dinghy Racing Squad coaches which allowed time for the breeze to build, the collection of Toppers, Lasers, a Phantom and a RS200 hit the water to the first two of four races. Race 1 set the pattern that was to follow for the rest of the day with the lead being contended by the previous year’s winner Tom French in his Laser and Dave Blakesley in a borrowed Phantom. Behind them a second battle reigned between the leading two Toppers of Matthew Aldous-Horne and Tim Le Couilliard plus the Laser Radial of Idris Wurie. In between the two groups Olly Love battled alone singlehanded in a RS200, lacking weight on both the upwind legs and the tight reaches.

After a welcome lunch provided by BLYM the second pair of races were held in an improving breeze and pleasant sunshine. Whilst on handicap Tom French won the battle at the front for the Senior County Shield in all four races, the places for the leading Junior in the Toppers was only decided on a count back with the Junior County Shield going to Tim Le Couilliard.
