Solo Spring Championships at Oxford Sailing Club

by Doug Kerr, Oxford SC 12 Apr 2010 14:33 BST 10 April 2010

58 Solos journeyed to Oxford Sailing Club at Farmoor Reservoir to be met with initially no wind but beautiful sunshine. By the end of the day all entrants had enjoyed some excellent and highly competitive racing.

The first race scheduled for an 11.00am start was delayed until a gentle 5 knots of wind filled in at 1.00pm. Due to the delayed start all three races were run back to back by race officer Peter Bickerton and his willing team of volunteers. Each race lasted about an hour and were turned round in short order.

The first race was postponed just before the start due to a major wind shift, after a reset of the course, the race finally got underway after 2 recalls and the benefit of a black flag. The light winds were very shifty and in the first race in particular, the left of the course was the favoured side, with those on the right suffering badly. The wind picked up slightly for races 2 and 3 and wind speed hit the dizzy heights of 7 - 8 knots.

Chris Brown took first place in Race 1 and consolidated his position with a 2nd in the 3rd race and taking the overall championship. Jon Clarke was consistent with two 3rd places and secured 2nd position in the championship. First veteran and 3rd place in the championship went to Dave Mitchell with a 2nd and 5th in races 2 and 3. The grand master prize went to Bob Taylor who finished 8th overall.

Chris Brown thanked Bob Ashby - Oxford fleet captain, the race team, Gill for her excellent catering and the clubs hospitality.

Oxford Sailing club look forward to the Solos returning next year.
