Supernova 2010 season preview

by Barry Winter 20 Jan 2010 21:21 GMT

2010 is going to be an exciting year for the Supernova Class. All one designs evolve and the Supernova is no exception. Over the years the class has seen the move to adjustable raking rigs, the change of builders from Giles to Hartley, the change to foam sandwich construction, mast ramps and most recently the Hyde Sail. These changes have generally been gradual over the years but 2010 will see a step change for the class with the introduction of the new Jeckells made sail which many in the class have already been trying and providing feedback on (to replace the Hyde) and more significantly a complete re-vamp to the top-sides. The biggest change in the class since its beginning. The details are still being worked on by a leading dinghy designer but it is likely to lead to an open transom self-draining cockpit and deck mouldings reflecting the current favoured fit out. The first public unveiling will be the dinghy show. A reflection of the interest in this change is that there are nearly 20 new boats on order and plenty of orders for the new sail.

For 2009 attendance figures held up well on the circuit and the class has always had a busy calendar and 2010 is no exception. The season kicks off on 23rd January at Draycote for the Winter Champs (one of two visits in the year) and then the Travellers series starts at South Cerney SC on 13th March starting a 14 event long series taking in a lot of the varied traditional favoured venues (including new ones at Weston, Combs and Draycote again) ending at Draycote SC in October. The class generally favours Saturday opens and there are three weekend meets in the Travellers series.

The Nationals has a first visit to Llandudno in early July for a 3 day National Championships where a strong turnout is expected and the Inlands returns to Northampton SC after a great event there in 2009. Last year there were different winners for the each of the championship events and the travellers and completion is tight (but friendly!) all the way down the fleet.
