A light northerly breeze and a chilly day welcomed the members and visitors to the fifth and final week of the Revett Winter Series at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club on Sunday 13 December 2009. The Revett series was run over 5 weekends up to and including this weekend. Looking forward there’s now the Children’s Christmas Party on the 20th and then a break until the big one on the 1st January 2010.

5 weeks in and 125 different helms have sailed in the 3 fleets encompassing the Asymmetric, the Laser and the Handicap fleet. The OOD was on the water this weekend and set a compact course in front of the clubhouse in very tricky circumstances. The clubhouse again remained busy all day with a number of visitors and members sitting the day out in the warmth.

Asymmetric Fleet (19 entries today)

It was the RS200 of Tom Gillard and Niki Birrell who dominated the day’s racing with Paul & Mike Allen in the RS400 keeping them on their toes all day. Consistent sailing throughout the series saw the lads take a comfortable victory 2 points ahead of the Allen brothers.

Lasers (17 entries today)

Elliot Hanson and Dave Shiel were race winners this week but it was the series consistency which saw Paul Heath take a comfortable victory in the Laser fleet. Neil Skellam showed consistent form throughout the series to take the second spot on the podium. Greg Booth from Port Dinorwic was never far from the front all series to finish 4th overall. Dave Shiel slotted in third overall.

Handicap (15 entries today)

Mike Webster in the Phantom led this series from start to finish with the Solos of Steve White and Mike Broatch finishing close behind in 2nd and 3rd. Haydn Griffiths and Bobby Hewitt in their Optimists finished 8th and 9th overall in a fleet of 45 boats and should be very proud and hold their junior heads up high.

Overall it was again a very busy day at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club. The numbers maintained full strength this week with over 50 boats on the water. The galley was kept busy over breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea & cakes. The safety teams had a relatively quiet day in the light conditions and the spectators were again treated to a fabulous day of racing right outside the clubhouse.

The series was capped with a splendid prize giving which was conducted by Leigh and Lowton’s new Commodore Mike Baldwin. Mike thanked the Sponsors, 1st Mark http://www.1stmark.co.uk and all the operational teams who made the Revett the success it always is. The next event is the New Years Day Pursuit Race, open to all to clear their heads after the New Year celebrations!
