Felixstowe Regatta sets sail for yet another successful year

by Helen Sharkey 4 Dec 2009 10:55 GMT 3-4 July 2010

Preparations are underway once again for the East Coast’s biggest sailing event, with organisers hoping that the 2010 event is even more successful than it has been in previous years.

The Felixstowe Regatta, to be sponsored once again in 2010 by the Haven Gateway Partnership, has undergone some significant changes from the 2009 event, which should result in more yachts entering and a higher level of racing for competitors.

The 2010 Regatta will be a two-day event, and take place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July in the waters of Dovercourt Bay. As well as a series of races for Modern IRC Rated, Locally Handicapped Cruising Yachts and Sportsboats, there will now be an opportunity for Multi-hull Yachts to take part, which is expected to produce an increase in the number of participants.

The website has been re-designed, this will provide more information and make the entry and registration process easier for competitors, as well as being able to post the results of races in real time. Visit www.felixstoweregatta.co.uk

The Regatta organising committee has also appointed a new Chairman, following the retirement of Nigel Mower. Peter Cockayne has now taken over the rudder and said of the event: “We are grateful once again to the Haven Gateway Partnership whose support means we can put on another great sailing event. We hope that the success of last year’s event, coupled with the changes we have made to the format, which are based on previous competitors feedback and input, will result in more yachts competing, a higher standard of racing, more on the water enjoyment and provide a super spectacle in July 2010.”

David Ralph, Chief Executive of the Haven Gateway Partnership added: “The Felixstowe Regatta is one of the East Coast’s premier sailing events and we are happy to support it and the marine leisure industry in the area. There are lots of opportunities for local businesses to get involved in the event and we hope that the 2010 Regatta is a great spectacle in which we can showcase this region as a leader in the field.”

The Felixstowe Regatta is run by a volunteer committee made up of members from Royal Harwich Yacht Club, Walton & Frinton Yacht Club, Haven Ports Yacht Club, Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club, and Waldringfield Sailing Club.
