Haven Ports Yacht Club Autumn Series - Day 3

by Peter Martin 21 Oct 2009 16:31 BST 18 October 2009

The third week of Haven Ports Yacht Club's Autumn series posed some problems as the morning dawned with little wind on Sunday. This, combined with some very strong tide, could make for a tricky day.

A course from Suffolk Yacht Harbour to points up the river Stour was the final decision with the Club Handicap boats turning at Parkstone and the IRC boats going on the Erwarton.

Of the three starts the most consistent on the line was the Club handicap, the IRC boats, save a few exceptions, made some very mediocre attacks on the line. It was kites away from the line and at number 2 buoy the decision had to be made, Shotley side or Trimley side to beat the last of the flood tide. The bulk went towards Shotley but it proved best to cross the stream and go to Trimley as the boats that did this and even crossing the stream again at the docks pulled out massive margins as the majority of the fleet parked outside of Shotley Marina.

It was the a windward trip up the stour before a run back to Shotley Horse and a fetch then beat back to the line at Levington. All this in zero to nine knots of breeze.
