Shadows at the Island Yacht Club Cat Open

by Chas Bedford 20 Sep 2009 21:55 BST 19-20 September 2009

Five Shadows sailed a TT event at Island Yacht Club, Canvey Island, as part of IYC's Cat Open. A weekend of light and distinctly variable winds was more than compensated for by some superb organisation from the host club, who managed to get in a full programme of five races. Onshore was good as well, with a very welcome trolley-handling service.

On the water, Olly Harris (Weston YC) enjoyed the challenging conditions, cranking up five wins. Paul Tanner, Gurnard's heavy wind ace proved he is good in the light stuff as well, with five second places. In Sunday's racing he was often to be seen in front of Olly, just not at the finishes which were both very close.

It was equally tense at the back of the fleet, with Brian Keenlyside (IYC), Chas Bedford (Isle of Sheppey SC) and Bruce Vigar (Herne Bay SC) enjoying some very close racing, frequently swapping places. In race 4, Brian beat Chas for third place by a margin of only a second or two as they headed for opposite ends of the line.

Overall Results:

1st Olly Harris (Weston YC) 4pts
2nd Paul Tanner (Gurnard SC) 8pts
3rd Brian Keenlyside (Island YC) 13pts
4th Chas Bedford (Isle of Sheppey SC) 14pts
5th Bruce Vigar (Herne Bay SC) 19pts
