Autumn Pint (18 September 2004)

Last weekend Itchenor Sailing Club hosted two open meetings, one each day. As seems to be the nature of the open meeting season, it was windy again.

Saturday dawned and the Itchenor 14 fleet made a late dash to the start after a delay arranged around Katie Nurton's 30th birthday celebrations the night before. A slightly hung-over fleet shot up the first beat and down the run. Victor Brellisford/Damian Ash leading the fleet, up the beat and straight to the finish line, completely ignoring the 3 laps of windward/leewards between. The whole fleet decided that the 14 president must be right so also finished the shortest 14 race in history. (11 minutes). This was clearly testament to the great party the night before.

The second race saw a very much smaller fleet take to the start as the wind picked up yet again to 27 knots, later peaking to 33 knots. It was the sort of fleet that could very easily finish top five in a World Championship race. The lead three, Brellisford/Ash, Archie Massey/George Nurton and Charlie Duchesne/Ben Cooper rounded the top mark within 3 boat-lengths. From here, a long two-sail reach along a very gusty Hayling shore, right in the death-zone, saw Brellisford/Ash pitch pole. Massey/Nurton capsized to windward as their new non-gybing board gybed to leeward. Duchesne/Cooper breezed through the carnage into the lead with Jarrod Simpson/Harvey Hillary inheriting second.

On the way back to Hayling from channel, Brellisford/Ash showed their superior knowledge of the marks within Chichester Harbour and nipped inside Duchesne/Cooper who were struggling to find the next buoy. Duchesne/Cooper then picked up what can only be described as a bale of straw on their rudder down the run and had to capsize to untangle allowing Simpson/Hillary & Massey/Nurton to come through into second and third. The wind was now up to it's 33 knot peak and the final run back to the Itchenor line saw Simpson/Hillary tip it in on the final gybe allowing Massey/Nurton through into second but Duchesne Cooper were too far back to capitalise and had to settle for fourth.

Autumn Pint Results:

1st Victor Brellisford/Damian Ash 1
2nd Archie Massey/George Nurton 2
3rd Jarrod Simpson/Harvey Hillary 3
4th Charlie Duchesne/Cooper 4

Autumn Trophy (19 September 2004)

The wind never really let off. This was drag racing at its best, with Mike Lennon/John McKenna proving exceptionally good at it. Hyde Sails have developed a smaller roached main for 17 knots plus and it seems to really work. Lennon/McKenna had a conservative start, sailed around the outside of the group, tacked across them and were gone. Brellisford/Ash again showed similar boat speed to the day before for a second, Massey/Nurton came in a solid third and Duchesne/Cooper fourth. After that there was a small gap before Andy Partington/Ben Vernieres. A notable to mention should go to Douglas Pattison/Dan Ayton, who in between kite wraps, showed 'scary speed', with new Batt sails coming in 6th.

The next race saw Brellisford/Ash, Lennon/McKenna and Massey/Nurton arriving at the top mark together. Lennon/McKenna and Massey/Nurton involved themselves with a small passing yacht and Brellisford/Ash sped off never to be touched again. Lennon/McKenna suddenly disappeared off the course. Simpson/Hillary and Partington/Vernieres came steaming upwind, easily passing Archie Massey. They continued on to take second and with it second overall on count back.

Overall Results:

1st Victor Brellisford 2,1
2nd Andy Partington 5,2
3rd Archie Massey 3,4
4th Jarrod Simpson 6,3
