Junior Holiday Regatta at Christchurch Sailing Club Overall

by Chris Arnell 3 Sep 2009 12:28 BST 24-28 August 2009

The final week of Christchurch Sailing Club's Junior Holiday regatta was held from August 24th to 28th. A record turnout of 45 sailors experienced typical summer conditions such as 30 knots of wind and driving rain. Despite this, a good programme of racing & games was completed and everyone had a great time.

Youngest participant, 5 year old Marley Hodgkinson, won the Whittingham trophy for the most memorable moment, which basically consisted of her finding the most creative ways to fall out of an optimist.

The Endeavour Trophy, for the sailor making the best effort without winning an event, was won by Chris Kelly; partly due to his sailing and also the fact that he frequently made a 3 to 4 hour round-trip bus journey from Salisbury just to take part.

The Dave Tanner trophy for the best performance by a sailor promoted to a higher division, was won by Liam Cullingford.

Best under 14 boy was George Lawrence.
Best under 14 girl was Isobel Booth.

The Seamanship trophy was awarded to Junior Captain Richard Beasley for his coaching & safety boat support. Instead of sailing his own boat, Richard dedicated his holiday to helping the other sailors and he was a popular winner.

Thanks are due a very willing & capable group of helpers & volunteers, without whom this event could not have taken place, and also to our RYA Regional Race coach, Alex Ford, for his enthusiastic support & good humour, even when sailing Optmists.
