Success for Lymington XOD sailors at Cowes Week

Stuart Jardine has extended his record of X One Design Captain’s Cup wins at Cowes Week to eight spanning an incredible 54 years. First winning the trophy in 1956 with his twin brother Adrian and Jane Pitt-Pitts at the age of 22, Stuart came back into the class in the late nineties and has since won at Cowes Week another seven times. This year Stuart was crewed by his son Mark and long-time crew (and now 7 time Captain’s Cup winner himself) Christian Brewer.

It was a fantastic week for the class with 80 XODs racing – the largest fleet at Cowes Week by a huge margin. Six races were held in a variety of conditions with some of the closest racing ever seen in the class. The universal opinion of the fleet is that the standard of competition is now at the highest in the 98 year history of the X class. The number of Olympic, World, European and National champions from other sailing classes increases year on year. Double Olympic gold medallist Sarah Webb took part in the racing on X-76 ‘Myrtle’ and is already hooked on the class.

Lymington sailors had a hugely successful week taking four of the top 6 positions overall. Adrian Summers, Ian Paton and Warren Cloate on X-87 ‘Excalibur’ contended for the title right to the last race to finish third overall, Stephen Whiteman on X-42 ‘Julia’ finished fourth and Ado Jardine on X-140 ‘Lucrezia’ came in sixth. These performances were enough for Lymington to win the Phillipson Challenge Shield for top division in the XOD class.

The class is now looking forward to the Centenary celebrations in 2011. Over 100 XODs are expected to race for the Captain’s Cup, which will make the starts off the Cowes green a sight to behold.
