Tummel Week at Loch Tummel Sailing Club

26-31 July 2009
The poor forecast didn’t seem to put off the entrants to this years Tummel Week. With around 60 boats over three classes and over 100 people it was another great week. The week started on Sunday with an all classes race for the ‘Anniversary Race’ which is an annual club race. This race was won, after a restart, by Dave Sword and Robert Signer in their Solos who crossed the line together. After racings Swords provided some delicious Steak Pies for the competitors to tuck into.
The rain was back for Monday, but fortunately the wind was in plentiful supply and two races were completed in both classes. In between racing the proper events started with various ‘activities’ for all ages organised, these generally involved getting wet, or trying not to get wet!
Racing continued on Tuesday with the front runners emerging in all classes. The first race was another all classes race, this time a long distance race to the island at the other end of the loch. This race was completed by all boats ranging from a Musto Skiff to several Optimists, and was won by Mike and Fiona Barron in their Flying Fifteen. Following the second race of the day there was a bit of a soggy BBQ organised, but fortunately the new improved clubhouse was large enough for most to stay dry. Following the BBQ the annual ‘Pub Quiz’ was contested between 10 teams ranging from the ‘professionals’ to the ‘need more practise’. Team ‘Hot Coffee’ join the list of those teams on the Wooden Spoon and rather familiar faces managed to win again!
Back to the racing and in the fast class, Richard and Mhari Harper in their RS 200 were making it look easy, but after a slow start the Flying Fifteens of Mike and Fiona Barron and Ian and Pauline MacLaren were starting to put a good series together. The Medium class was dominated by Mark and Emma Simpson in their National Twelve, followed by the two Solos and a gaggle of Lasers. In the slow class Sam Foster, and dad Graham seemed to have things their own way, closely followed by Nicollo Vetta in his Optimist.
Wednesday had just one race, followed by a much needed rest in the afternoon. Some took time to chill out in the club grounds, which were starting to look a bit like the trenches after all the rain, whilst other found time to fix boats and bodies, or explore the beautiful local scenery. Thursday morning dawned and there were mutterings of ‘not more wind!’ around the dinghy park, but the author is not sure whether this was due to the tiredness of everyone due to all the hard work on the water, or on the dance floor in the previous evening!
Thursday afternoon saw the wind at its peak, along with amazing sunny skies, a reduced fleet took to the water and enjoyed some of the best wind of the season, plus a few swims to cool down. A bit less wind on Friday, but still enough to get the final two races in, which were followed by the prizegiving and another fantastic meal for everyone.
Overall it was another great, if a little soggy week, and a big thanks to all who come along and helped make it work, plus those in the kitchen feeding us and those who organised all the extra activities in between the racing.
