Lightning368 Southerns at Cookham Reach Sailing Club

Southern Championship & Derek Bayley Trophy

On this fine Saturday, Cookham Reach SC hosted its 3rd Lightning 368 Open meeting comprising the Southern Championship and its own ‘Derek Bayley’ club trophy, and attracted a record turnout.

The 8 visitors and 10 club members were greeted with sunshine and a light force 1-2 westerly wind that occasionally swung to the north, making for some tricky sailing on this beautiful reach of the Thames in Berkshire.

After a recall due to a problem in the Box, the fleet got away for the 1st of the 3 planned races. Adam Styles (236) made the best start by using the start-line angle, followed by the home club’s Alex Singleton (304) and Jack Deung (155). Adam opened up a comfortable 100m lead on the 1st lap but this was gradually eroded by John Claridge (402) on the 2nd lap, with Alex Jones (145) working his way up to 3rd place following a poor start. Alex Jones continued to work his way through to take line honours from Adam and Simon Hopkins (288) who had also worked his way through the fleet. Chris Abela (369) was 4th.

Following the pasta-bake lunch the fleet again set off, this time with John, Jack, Caroline Key (400) and Simon Styles (292) setting the pace. However it was not long before Alex Jones began to make his presence felt as he and Caroline broke away from the rest of the fleet to have there own battle for 1st place. This was eventually won by Caroline with Alex 2nd, Simon 3rd and Alex’s brother, Gareth (119), coming through to take 4th place.

The 3rd race was sailed back-to-back by almost the full fleet – the Derek Bayley competition allowing no discard. Jack led the fleet off the line followed by Adam and Alex Jones but it was not long before the latter two were battling it out for 1st place with Alex coming out the eventual winner from John and Simon, with Gareth again in 4th.

The awards were presented after tea and cakes, plus a few beers, by Derek Bayley and his wife Pearl. Alex Jones gave a vote of thanks to the organising team, and Ben Harris promoted the forthcoming Lightning Opens.
