Dart 18 Grand Prix Round 5 at Parkstone Yacht Club

by Dart 18s 22 Jul 2009 17:01 BST 18-19 July 2009

A total of 28 boats entered the event at Parkstone Yacht Club, despite a forecast for a windy weekend. This compromised of a very impressive turnout 14 local club boats matching the 14 visitors. The force 4 to 5 breeze on Saturday permitted 3 races to be held, back to back, out in the bay. These races where dominated by Paul Wakelin and Will Thompson, with just two points separating their boats at the end of the day.

Saturday evening was a great success at the club, with curry laid on, along with both a live band and disco. Together with a reasonably priced bar, these where the cause of more than the odd sore head the next day.

Sunday saw more wind, and the call by the race team to sail inside the harbour. Launching in 25 knots of wind, most of the fleet made their way over to start the race. The wind continued to rise, and at one point over 32 knots was recorded. It was most probably this that led to only 9 boats managing to complete the course successfully, with many others capsizing and then dropping their main sails to return to the club. Paul Wakelin won this race, leaving him to win overall on count back over Will Thompson. Local sailor Geoff Sherwood was also tied on points with Dave Roberts, but got third place on count back.

Many thanks to Parkstone Yacht Club for an excellent event, and also to Windsport for their sponsorship. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon at Netley Sailing Club.

Fickle winds and fluctuating fortunes Wednesday was to have been a day of round-the-harbour courses for most of the fleets racing in Poole Week. The Dolphins and Cornish Shrimpers tend to sail round-the-harbour courses anyway - none of this triangle/sausage business for them. Posted on 29 Aug 2024
