RS200 Open at Bexhill Sailing Club

by Paul Suggitt 8 Jun 2009 11:50 BST 7 June 2009

Despite forecasts of severe weather for the Sunday ten visiting RS200’s took a chance and made the journey to Bexhill Sailing Club to join five local boats. They were rewarded with a warm welcome and what turned out to be excellent and challenging and varied sailing conditions. Thank you to all the our visitors who made the event.

Due to the rising forecast it was decided to run three races back to back rather than the planned four races with a lunch break, a wise decision by Race Officer Clare Day and her team stationed on the committee boat (yacht Salsa skippered by Jim Winter).

The first two races were started in a good force four with a heavy sea. The first race was won by husband and wife team Andrew and Jeraldine Peters from Queen Mary SC. The second race was won by Steve Restall and Katie Restalll from Downs SC.

Contrary to the forecast the wind strength fell dramatically and was very light by the start of the third race which was eventually won by Dicken MacKean and Becky Hyde from Island Barn SC. This race featured the best finish by the Bexhill SC pair of Mike Chapman and Lynne Ratcliffe who finished third.

With such experienced RS200 circuit racers competing it was no surprise that the local sailors had their own competition towards the back of the fleet.

As usual the visitors were quick to praise the efficient and friendly race organisation provided by the members at Bexhill SC, and we look forward to welcoming them back in the future.
