Baily Bowl at the Royal Alfred Yacht Club

by Gordon Davies 18 May 2009 13:47 BST 16-17 May 2009

The Royal Alfred Yacht Club continued a proud 150 year old tradition of organising regattas in Dun Laoghaire for Corinthian yachtsmen and one design classes. The annual Baily Bowl regatta was sailed this weekend despite south-easterly gales and a large swell.

All competitors were grateful when PRO Harry Gallagher abandoned racing on Saturday. On Sunday, despite gusts up to 28 knots and vicious rain squalls, racing went ahead. On the more exposed A course 9 Dragons and 28 SB3s managed only one race before the Race Committee called it a day. Tucked in behind the Dun Laoghaire breakwater, the Race Committee ran 3 races for the Squibs (15 entries) and Flying Fifteens (16 entries).

Vincent Delaney, stalwart of the Water Wag class (a class that has been racing in Dublin Bay since 1887), made a clean sweep of the Squib class, winning all 3 races. In the Flying Fifteens, John Lavery won 2 races to claim both the Baily Bowl and the FF15 South Coast Championship.
