Open Day at Hollowell Sailing Club on 9th May

by Nicola Wilkinson 2 May 2009 23:30 BST 9 May 2009

Gets bumper sailing season underway

Hollowell Sailing Club has celebrated the start of a bumper sailing season as one of five UK clubs to have been selected to receive a Royal Yachting Association Club of the Year Award 2009. On coming second Commodore Mike Pipes said: “This external recognition is a great credit to all of our club members who contribute to the daily life of the Club and its well-renowned family friendly atmosphere.”

Hollowell Sailing Club is also formally recognised as an OnBoard Club by the RYA. This recognition comes with financial support and assistance from the RYA OnBoard Development Officer to help attract more young people to the Club with their families. From the end of April local Scouts groups will be sending young people to taster sessions where they will hope to achieve Stage 1 certificates and progress into the Club’s own youth teams.

Aspiring young sailor at Hollowell, Hugh Brayshaw, won the Young Sportsman Award of the Year for both Daventry District Council and Northamptonshire against a glittering array of nominations. He was also recognised for his Excellence in Sport at Rugby's Sports Awards earlier this year.

Set in a tranquil and picturesque valley within 10 miles of Northampton and 20 miles of Leicester, Hollowell Sailing Club offers great dinghy sailing and windsurfing.

Last year saw investment of members’ time and funds amounting to £100,000 in the creation of new access roads, extended car and boat parking and refurbished changing rooms upgrading facilities originally founded in 1966.

The club boasts over 250 members and caters for all abilities and ages with a particular focus on developing the skills of young sailors. It has also built a reputation for its friendly atmosphere and active social calendar which includes barbecues, camping and family days.

Everyone is welcome to visit the club on its Public Open Day from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 9 May. Activities will include sailing and windsurfing taster sessions, BBQ and children’s fun.
