Inaugural Christchurch Sailing Club Spring Junior Regatta

by Chris Arnell 19 Apr 2009 21:13 BST 15-17 April 2009

16 young sailors took part in Christchurch Sailing Club's inaugural Spring Regatta, held over 3 days from April 15th - 17th during the Easter Holidays.

Wednesday's racing was thrilling, with a gusty 20 knot breeze. Toby Yeabsley, sailing a laser, excelled in the conditions to win race 1. Jack Arnell, aged just 11, put in his best performance with two second places in a Laser Radial. Liam Cure also enjoyed the strong breeze to take 1st place in race 2.

Thursday's races took place in sunny conditions and a light 5-8 knot breeze which saw some new faces appear at the front of the fleet. Duncan Yeabsley sailed well to take two bullets, with Jonathan Arnell sailing consistently in his Radial to take 2nd place in both races. Further down the fleet some great tussles were taking place in the Toppers, with Stacey Herring, Holly Fell & Molly Macklin swapping places throughout both races.

Day 3 also saw lighter breezes which Duncan Yeabsley exploited to secure 1st place overall with a 3rd & 1st in the final two races. Liam Cure, Joanne Arnell & Jamie Tarrant were in close contention, with Liam just taking the win in race 5 to claim victory in the Topper fleet.

Thanks are due to Race Officer Tony Lock and his team for taking the time out from their Easter holidays to put on a very successful event.

Overall Results:

1st - Duncan Yeabsley - Laser
2nd - Liam Cure - Topper
3rd - Jack Arnell - Radial
4th - Jamie Tarrant - Radial
1st girl - Joanne Arnell - Topper
1st Novice - Stacey Herring - Topper
1st Optimist - Connor McKay
