Largs SC held a New Year Regatta on 4th January, in a light NW breeze in cool temperatures. Prizes from new sponsor Sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde encouraged the sailors to turn out in force, with 18 boats launching.
Race Officer Mark Herrington gave the fleet two rounds of a windward leeward in the first race, then just one triangle in the second race. In Lasers, Glenn Andrews had a cracker of a start to lead for the first round, then Billy McCarlie took over, before Andy McDaid eventually fought his way through. McDaid took the second race more comfortably to win the class. McCarlie took second and John Kent third overall. In the Junior class, Alistair Kent started well in the first race to win comfortably, but Andrew Malone had the better of the starts in the second race, so Kent had to work his way up to record his second win and take the class, both sailing Toppers.
Robbie Burns/ Vicki Simpson enjoyed a good outing in their new RS200. Starting on port in both races, they jumped the gun as well as the fleet in the first race, but recovered well to win both races in the Handicap fleet. Fellow RS200 sailor Martin Faulkner took second, with Chris Nichol and Dawn McCrae third in their International 14.
