Firefly Nationals at Tenby Sailing Club overall

by Barney Smith 15 Aug 2004 08:31 BST

Race 8 - The Tomato Boats Trophy

Tony Gunstone and Lucie Buck have won the 58th Firefly National Championships after a thrilling last race. With five teams still able to win the 52 boat fleet away first time using a gate start. Top GBR match racer Ian Williams sailing with Lizzie Edwards led the race from the first mark pursued by Alex Davey and Sally Wilson. Gunstone and Buck from the Imperial Poona Yacht Club gradually worked their way through to second which secured them the coveted Sir Richard Fairey Point series cup by a narrow margin from Williams and Edwards.

Barnaby Smith and Alice Gardner just pipped Dom Johnson and Debs Kershaw for 4th overall. Top team racers Johnson and Kershaw failed to pip them after using every trick in the book to try and get the necessary two places between them and Smith in the final race.

Top Over 40 team and 12th overall, Peter and Dawn Langdon have an astonishing combined age approaching 140. The first ladies team, Julia Cornah and Jennifer Corkhill, come from the opposite end of the age range and also took home the under 21 prize.

Tenby Sailing Club ran a superb National Championships on and off the water with the fleet completing all eight planned races. The Firefly fleet again proved its suitability for young and old, families and students. Next years Championships will be at Felixstowe Ferry in Suffolk from the 13th to the 19th August 2005.
