18th Triple B Race at Buckenham Sailing Club

by Michael Cullum 14 Sep 2008 16:22 BST 6 September 2008

Eighteen Boats turned out on Saturday for Buckenham Sailing Club's 18th Triple B race, sailed in a moderate to strong southerly wind on the river Yare with entrants from as far away as St Albans and Milton Keynes.

The first starters left at 7:00am and made a quick passage to Reedham. The last boat to start was Arthur Wells in a Laser at 8:20am. The favourable wind which began to strengthen sped many competitors to Burney Arms before the tide turned. These competitors, having rounded the mark, found themselves beating against the ebbing tide. Wells timed his run to perfection, rounding the mark just after the tide had turned.

Most competitors had a tough time beating back to Buckenham. The worst of the weather hit in the middle in the afternoon, when a vicious squall left the last two boats; an Enterprise and a Miracle, upside down. They both recovered to finish the race.

The first boat home was a Javelin crewed by Tom and Jim Frost. The winner on handicap was visiting boat Birubi; a Leader crewed by Chris and Jane Wharmby.
