Gul RS400 Nationals at Exe Sailing Club - Day 2

by Paul Hilliar 25 Aug 2008 23:30 BST 24-28 August 2008

Wind and waves provide fantastic conditions

Competitors at the Gul RS400 national championships were treated to two races in fantastic conditions today. The F3-4 breeze was much steadier than yesterday and it was accompanied by a sizable rolling swell. For the first race, Paul Hilliar/Stu Jagger won the pin and crossed the fleet to take an early lead but it was Dave Jones/Mark Hogan who led at the first mark from Hilliar/Jagger and overnight leaders Nick Craig/Fiona Clark. On the first downwind, Hilliar/Jagger took the lead and built a little gap from Craig/Clark. The leading pair pulled away but Craig/Clark never found a way past and finished second, ahead of Jones/Hogan.

The wind and waves continued to build for the second race and this time it was John Cooper/Becci Wigley who showed the early form, second at the first mark behind Craig/Clark before taking the lead on the first downwind. However in the building waves they couldn’t maintain the early pace and succumbed to Craig/Clark and Hilliar/Jagger. Yesterday’s race winners Josh Metcalfe/Elaine Marsh pulled through to take a solid third place.

Results after Day 2: (4 races, no discard)
