Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Overall

by David Elliott 23 Aug 2008 08:03 BST 16-22 August 2008

Arthur Henderson and Matthew Currell sailing 8561 Bad Influence are this year’s Cadet National and Open Champions. The Tamesis/Parkstone pairing’s score of 21 points was 6 ahead of runners-up Alex Young and Jack Hardie from Frensham Pond, sailing 8513 Di Maggio.

With first and second places already decided, today’s tenth and final race of the series saw four crews come to the start line in with a chance for third place. Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) on 47 points, John Page/Alexander Page (8521) on 49, George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) on 58 and Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen on 71 were all in contention as a further discard could be taken with the completion of the race.

The lead was held at the first Windward by Zoe McBride/Rhos Hawes (8533) from Sophie Dingwall/Josie Gummer (5000) in second and Charlie Impey/Jack Wilson (9047) in third, with a useful gap to the rest of the fleet. Of the contenders for third place overall, John Page/Alexander Page (8521) were best placed in 13th, with George Ayre/ Nick Sutton (8542) one place behind. Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) were some way off the pace, along with Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668).

By the Leeward mark, Sophie Dingwall/Josie Gummer (5000) had taken the lead, with Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) in second place and James Hayward/Alex Warrington (9631) in third. George and Nick headed John and Alex by four places, with Josh and Naomi a further seven behind.

The lead changed hands over the course of the next beat. Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) moved to the front and held on to take the gun from Sophie Dingwall/Josie Gummer (5000) in second and James Hayward/Alex Warrington (8631) in third. George Ayre/Nick Sutton (8542) finished seventh and John Page/Alexander Page (8521) finished 17th, but their margin over Josh Flack/Naomi Flack (8434) who finished 20th, was insufficient to stop the Parkstone brother and sister from taking third place overall.
