Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 4

by David Elliott 21 Aug 2008 10:27 BST 16-22 August 2008

Two further races were sailed today in a Force 5 Westerly wind. Conditions favoured then experienced crews and around a quarter of the fleet either stayed ashore or withdrew. Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) continue to hold first place overall. The Tamesis/Parkstone pairing have a four point margin over second placed Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) from Frensham Pond, with Josh Flack/ Naomi Flack (8434) from Parkstone in third.

Race 6

Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513) achieved their second victory of the event, following on from their success the previous afternoon. They led at the Windward mark from Josh Flack/ Naomi Flack (8434) in second and Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668) in third and together pulled away from the main fleet. These positions were maintained for the duration of the race. Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) recovered from 13th place at the first mark to finish fourth.

Race 7

This was probably the tightest race of the event to date. There was little margin between the top fifteen boats at the first Windward mark and close sailing continued as the race developed. Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668) had established a small lead by the final Windward mark and held on to this to take the gun. Second place went to James Hayward/Alex Warrington (9631) in a close finish with Alex Young/Jack Hardie (8513).

Being surrounded by hills and mountains has the inevitable effect So far the conditions on Lake Lipno have provided for excellent and challenging sailing, however being surrounded by hills and mountains can mean that the winds are shifty and can be light at time, and this proved to be the case on day 3.
