Hobie 405 Nationals at Holyhead Sailing Club - Day 3

by Bob Tuckwood 5 Aug 2004 22:15 BST Thursday 5th August 2004

Revived and rested after after their lay day the 16 Junioir and Youth teams started the day racing inside the harbour as the sea mist covered the bay. The mist cleared for the afternoon, the sun shone and the wind increased to give the sailors a great day.

Race 9:

The fleet were away first time and a very close race followed with places changing on many occasions. Sophie White and James Fosket managed to cross the line first in a tight bunch with Huw Humphries & Max Todd, and Holly Tuckwood & Rebecca Kilburn not realising that they were on the last lap and having to gybe back to pass through the line.

Race 10:

Mark Landry & Peter Lang had another good race and scored a first keeping them ahead of William Twemlow & Andy Bath in the series. Holly & Rebecca finished third.

Race 11:

The course was laid out in the bay and the race was the first of the week to be held in 'windy' conditions. The sun shone and the gusts hit 18 knots as the 405's revelled with crews flat on the wire. Will & Andy enjoyed themselves and put another first place in the bag. Local boys Huw & Max were close behind with Mark & Peter coming in third.

Race 12:

The wind moderated to 12 knots and gave the crews another good race. Will & Andy showed their pace and skill again to grab another first with Sophie & James a close second and Huw & Max closing the gap on the overall leading bunch finishing third.

The final three races will be played out tomorrow and anyone of the first five boats could win.
