Merrydown Sailing Weekend at Ryde Rowing Club

by Neville Hill 21 Jul 2008 23:21 BST 27-28 September 2008

On Sunday 28th September, Ryde Rowing Club will celebrate 50 years of continuous sponsorship by Merrydown plc of the Club’s annual sailing race which is held from Appley Beach, Ryde.

This sailing weekend has been listed at number 29 in Yachts & Yachting’s 50 events to do before you die. It is anticipated that many previous winners and others who have competed since the 1950s will attend even if only to renew acquaintance with Merrydown’s vintage cider.

The race on Saturday 27th is for the Vena Phillips Trophy with the start gun at 1045hrs (HW 1140hrs). On the Sunday the race for the Merrydown Bowl starts at 1100hrs (HW 1140hrs).

The races are open to catamarans and monohulls with handicaps based on Portsmouth Yardsticks and will be conducted under ‘RRC’ Rules. Competitors from the mainland will find it convenient to launch from Stokes Bay Sailing Club to reach Appley Beach which is about 1 km East of Ryde Pier.
