Deauville International Week - Overall

Third edition more than lives up to expectations

Sunday 1st June rounded off the 3rd edition of Deauville International Sailing week on a high note: 2 races were run in glorious sunshine prior to a return to the quayside late morning, thus bringing the total number of races validated from 10 to 12 according to the series.

Nevertheless, the week began in a difficult context with a strike movement by fishermen stretching right the way across the English Channel. However a constant and responsible dialogue with the local representatives of the Trouville / Deauville fishing committee enabled any disruption in the sequence of events to be avoided. Furthermore, it was also an opportunity to renew the support of the pleasure boat industry for that of fishing.

As a result nearly 80 yachts and 500 crew gathered in Deauville for this latest edition; around ten other yachts not able to make the Norman port in time given the social context. This global figure confirms the ever increasing development of the event over the past 3 years and is symbolic of its potential over the future editions.

The almost ideal weather conditions characterised by sun and 10 to 18 knots of breeze, quickly replaced the storms from the start of the week and provided racers with four days of intense racing and enjoyment, as the red faces on the quaysides at the end of the competition bore witness.

Up to 4 races a day were enabled, which further illustrated the calibre of the Baie de Seine race zone.

The battle was merciless on the 3 race zones and amongst the 8 competing series (747 OD / J 80 / FC.7.5 / J 109 / Mumm 30 / Sportsboats / IRC 1 /IRC 2) delivering some fine British, Dutch and French winners (see list below).

The sequence of events were entirely in keeping with the original aim of the event, namely to develop a great, top level international competition, which is able to attract not only French crews from the Channel, but also yachts from Britain, Ireland, Holland, Belgium…..
